Practicing what I preach, I downloaded and installed MacLampsX 2.0 and X-MasTree 1.2, both mentioned in, and available from http://ppcluddite.blogspot.com/2013/11/putting-christmas-spirit-on-your-mac.html. The picture above shows these two apps executing on my PowerMac G5 Quad, under Tiger. A very nice, and a very festive effect!
The Holly and the Christmas lights around the edge of the screen are courtesy of MacLampsX, and the Christmas tree is of course courtsey of X-MasTree. Both are enormously configurable – what is pictured above is the way I configured them. However, you can make the lights blink or not blink, you can use custom bulbs, you can control which color bulbs are shown, and so on. The Christmas Tree is similarly configurable.

Here’s a fun little holiday post. So you are feeling festive for the holiday season and want a cool way to decorate your computer desktop–I have the perfect app for you. The app is called MacLampsX and it’s completely free.

While the app hasn’t been updated for a few years, it still works as of macOS Mojave (the current release of macOS as of December 2018). To make it as easy as possible to download, I’m hosting the app on my server. You can download it here.
Once you have the app downloaded, open the DMG file and drag the MacLampsX icon into your Applications folder. With the app installed, open it from your Applications folder and you’ll be able to start customizing your desktop with various festive Christmas lights, snowflakes, and holly.
